Robert Devon Jenkins, 24, shot and killed Marcus Marks during a domestic dispute at Marks’ home on East 22nd Street in March 2011 said Calhoun County District Attorney Brian McVeigh.
McVeigh said several witnesses testified during the four-day trial in September that Jenkins and Marks engaged in a heated argument while friends and family helped move Marks’ ex-girlfriend out of the house. Three witnesses said Jenkins shot a handgun twice into the air and then six times into the home, hitting an unarmed Marks in the back and arm.
Calhoun County Circuit Judge Malcolm Street Jr. sentenced Jenkins after hearing testimony from Marks’ mother, Janet, who spoke on behalf of the victim’s family, McVeigh said.
Before he was sentenced, Jenkins told the family he was sorry, McVeigh said. No one other than Jenkins’ lawyer spoke on behalf of the defendant, McVeigh said.
Attempts Friday afternoon to reach Jenkins’ attorney, Tim Burgess, were unsuccessful.
