Let’s focus on the current Ohatchee mayor’s most impressive accomplishments. It’s not sensational. It’s not even headline worthy. It is something I am extremely proud to say. So here it is — we’re still Ohatchee.

We’re still solvent. After the worst cut in federal and state funding since 20 years before Bill Miller was a standout on the Creekbank, we’re still a town. After one of the worst tragedies our town has ever witnessed, we’re still a town. I worried. I truly did. I had seen the previous mayor’s budget with a set amount for traffic violations and almost $9 out of $10 already spent and I worried we couldn’t provide services to storm victims or those who lost services due to damage. I worried if we did, we wouldn’t maintain our independence as a municipality.

I was surprised to discover that my budget concerns had been addressed starting the day Steve Baswell took office. Math is not fun. Math is not headline-worthy. Math is not what sells newspapers. But Ohatchee is still here because of math. Ohatchee has the opportunity to really see growth because of math.

If you don’t appreciate what I’m saying, imagine waiting for the county or state to act on a small-town issue, but don’t hold your breath. For that reason alone, I will support a sitting mayor in Ohatchee for the first time in several years. I would ask everyone to support Baswell with their votes. Let’s turn the page from the kind of ineffective leadership in Ohatchee for all those years and give Steve Baswell a second term.
