As a merchant with a downtown Anniston business for the past 71 years, my family and city residents have been saddened by its decline. Urban sprawl and the emergence of shopping centers and suburbia throughout this country have resulted in the demise of thousands of downtowns such as Anniston’s. However, many have found their niche and rebounded with a boom.

Our downtown is vital to economic success. Its appearance can present an impression of triumph or defeat. We simply cannot allow it to deteriorate further. Millie Harris, City Council Ward 4 candidate, has repeatedly stated, “If Gadsden, Chattanooga and Prattville can do it, Anniston can, too.” I believe that through her can-do attitude she will explore all avenues, including tax incentives and abatements, municipal bonds, grants and partnerships with the private sector, and investigate how other municipalities have been successful to help make it happen here.

She will support existing businesses, work to make downtown a destination place and act to entice new business while maintaining the small-town charm. The downtown area produces a large percentage of the tax base for the entire city. We need someone like Millie Harris with a passion for reviving our downtown and its tax base. Besides, our downtown is often what either impresses visitors or the opposite.

Join me in voting for Millie Harris for City Council Ward 4 on Tuesday. If you do not make the effort to vote in the runoffs, you should not complain about the results.
