However, it has been said that “good leaders lead by example.” I cannot think of a more appropriate quote to describe Millie Harris, candidate for Anniston City Council Ward 4, and her commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
After I moved back to Anniston four years ago, we connected as walking partners. Almost every day, whenever she isn’t walking, Millie is at the YMCA taking advantage of the fabulous fitness classes. She frequently cooks nutritious lunches for her family, rather than eating out. Her fitness partners can count on their gift of a yearly subscription to Health magazine, which she has done for years. We can relate to Millie because she reassures us that we slip at times, but it’s important not to beat ourselves up whenever we do and to get back on track. Although she agrees that individuals should assume responsibility and that laws cannot solve all our problems, Millie is supportive of initiatives that encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Whether it’s ecotourism with Coldwater Mountain and expansion of the Chief Ladiga Trail, a complete-streets policy of creating sidewalks and bike lanes where possible, Anniston Parks and Recreation’s outstanding programs, or the private sector’s notable events such as the Anniston Runners Club’s Woodstock 5K or the Northeast Alabama Bicycle Association’s Noble Street Festival, Millie Harris will be an enthusiastic ally who walks the talk.
Please join me in voting for a healthier Anniston by electing Millie Harris to the Anniston City Council for Ward 4 on Tuesday.
