Investigators searched a possible suspect’s home late last night and are obtaining a search warrant this morning for an impounded Ford Explorer believed to be the getaway vehicle in the crime, said Anniston police Sgt. Josh Doggrell.
Two men with handguns, wearing masks, robbed the check-cashing store near a Winn Dixie grocery in Saks around 2:30 p.m. Monday, taking an undisclosed amount of cash and driving away in a Ford Explorer, said witnesses at the scene.
Danielle Hendershot, a shift manager at a Marco’s Pizza next door to the Check n’ Go, said she saw the alleged robbers flee the scene, and chased them north on U.S. 431, traveling more than 90 mph in her 1998 Cadillac Catera. Hendershot said the Explorer flipped three times and crashed into an embankment on Beverly Road in Alexandria after taking a hard left turn. She said the two men climbed out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
Doggrell said this morning he was not at the scene on Beverly Road on Monday and could not confirm Hendershot’s story, but said he had heard someone from the pizza shop assisted police by chasing down two suspects.
Police are also investigating another Monday robbery at a Wow Beauty salon on Noble Street which might be connected to the Check n’ Go robbery, Doggrell said.
Around 9:30 a.m. Monday, two men wearing black masks and gloves and brandishing handguns robbed the salon and a customer at the store, taking an undisclosed amount of money and leaving on foot.
Doggrell said a witness’ description of the men were similar to the description of the alleged Check n’ Go robbers. Police today hope to obtain surveillance footage of the Monday morning crime.
