The second-annual Superman 5K at Wellborn Elementary School on Sept. 8 was a huge success. The Superman 5K Committee included Jennifer Yates, Barbara Hardcastle, Tammy Bain, Rabbit Henderson, Judson Blester, Charles McDonald, Francis Curry, Donna Gardner and Calhoun County Commissioner Eli Henderson.

Special thanks also to Mike Sanders and Food Outlet for supplying the hot dogs and fruit; Doug Shipp, Eli and David of Waffle House for cooking the smothered, covered, anyway you want ’um taters; Flowers Bakery for the bread; and last but not least, the guys who cooked the killer hot dogs — Wayne Thrasher, John Patterson and Buddy Webb. Thanks also to the many Wellborn teachers who volunteered their time.

This race is named after my brother, Kevin Thompson, who was a real superman. My mother, Francis, and I know Kevin was watching the race with a smile.
