Meehan said the student was living at the International House on campus and was participating in a skill-building retreat in Polk County, Tenn., sponsored by the house this weekend.
JSU spokeswoman Patty Hobbs said as of 9 p.m. Sunday, university officials had been unable to contact the student's family and were withholding the student's name.
A post on the West Polk County Volunteer Fire and Rescue’s website said a 21-year-old male drowned near the Horns Creek cabins where he was staying with a large group. He was transported to Sky Ridge Medical Center in Cleveland, Tenn.
Attempts late Sunday to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the West Polk Volunteer Fire Department and the Jacksonville State University International House were unsuccessful.
