Plantersville — Just about everything went well for the Clay Central in its 60-0 win over Dallas County, but Volunteers were particularly devastating on defense.

Clay Central limited Dallas County to just 47 yards rushing on 33 attempts and intercepted five passes. Devin Gaddis nabbed his pick 2 yards deep in the Clay Central end zone and returned it 102 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half.

“Defensively, we played well all night,” said Clay Central coach Steve Giddens. “When you block people hard and you tackle people hard, you’ve got a chance to win a lot of football games. Right now, we’re playing physical football.”

Jamari Staples, Chris Brisky, Hunter Bickerstaff and Anthony Wood also had interceptions for. In the second half, JoJo Staples returned a fumble approximately 25 yards for another touchdown by the Vols’ defense.

Clay Central’s offense needed just a minute and 58 seconds to score. Travis Smith crossed the goal line on a 1-yard run. Jaylon Lyles booted the extra point and the rout was on. Smith scored again on a 19-yard run in the third quarter. Tyrone Cosby had a 14-yard scoring run in the first quarter and a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Quarterback Jamario Lyles had a 1-yard touchdown run in the opening half. Midway through the fourth quarter, Tyrese Henderson scored on a 1-yard run and Malik Dark completed the scoring on an 11-yard run.

The Vols rushed for 324 yards. Cosby led with nine carries for 92 yards. Jamario Lyles was 4-for-7 passing for 66 yards. Jaylon Lyles was 5-for-7 on extra points and Kenneth Lacy hit 1-for-2.
