Weaver City Council candidate Les Hill is expected to secure the Place 4 council seat now that his opponent has bowed out of the race.

Hill’s opponent, Keith Campbell, said this week that he is discontinuing his bid for the council seat. The two were set to compete in an Oct. 9 runoff for the seat after they finished ahead of incumbent Odis Pippin in the Aug. 28 city election.

“At a time when Weaver’s finances are sparse, I feel the added financial burden of holding a runoff election is unnecessary when both candidates agree on the issues,” Campbell wrote in a statement. “With this in mind, I am withdrawing my name as a candidate for the Place 4 runoff election. I fully support Mr. Hill, the remaining City Council Members, and Mayor elect Wayne Willis.”

The City Council must approve a certificate of election for Hill to officially become a member of the council. City Clerk Teresa Dishman said she expects the council to vote on the measure at the next meeting.

Speaking to a reporter Thursday, Campbell said he came to know Hill during the race and subsequently decided his opponent would be a great choice for the council.

“He really ran a great campaign,” Campbell said. “I wish we could both be on the council.”

Hill finished ahead of Campbell in the race, 279 votes to 212. Pippin had 101 votes.

Campbell said he began to consider stepping down almost immediately after the vote totals were certified this week. He announced Wednesday that he was bowing out of the race, a day after the election results were approved by the council.

“I believe that Mr. Hill and I have Weaver’s best interest at heart and we both want to see improvement in our community,” Campbell wrote in the statement.

Attempts Thursday to speak with Hill for this story were unsuccessful.
