Meanwhile, voters in most cities and towns across the state will do the same. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. statewide for municipal elections. Only voters living in cities and towns holding elections will be allowed to cast ballots.
Since cities that elect some offices by ward or district, as in Anniston and Piedmont, were required to adjust their district lines after the 2010 census, some voters may vote for different offices and at different polling stations than in earlier elections. Voters with questions about their registration or polling place can visit AlabamaVotes.gov to enter their name or address, or contact the Calhoun County Board of Registrars at 256-241-2930.
“If they’ll just call us, we know exactly where they vote,” said Carolyn Henderson, a member of the board of registrars.
The elections will bring an end to campaigning for some candidates. For others, it’s simply the start of another stage in the race. Because state law requires candidates to have at least one vote more than half of those cast to be declared a winner, runoffs may be needed in some races where more than two names appear on the ballots.
That’s expected to be the case in Anniston, where intense interest in local politics over the last four years led 11 people to sign up to run for mayor. The race for Anniston’s Ward 4 council seat has five candidates on the ballot. Four names are on the ballot for mayor in both Hobson City and Ohatchee. Countywide, there are 13 races with three candidates seeking the same seat.
Runoff elections, if necessary, will be Oct. 9. Newly elected officials take office Nov. 5.
A few spots already are decided, as several offices have only one candidate signed up to run. Those include:
