The presidential election is this fall, so conspiracy theorists may be thinking that’s why gas prices are heading skyward.

There’s always a political plot, right?

Well, wrong — this time, at least. The Associated Press reported last week that ruptured pipelines serving Wisconsin and Illinois and shut-down refineries with equipment problems in Illinois and Indiana are to blame for the July/August spike. A recent blaze at a refinery in Richmond, Calif., hasn’t helped, either.

So don’t point an accusatory finger at Republican allies trying to make President Obama’s life difficult right before the election.

This time, blame plain-and-simple bad luck for our pain at the pump.
