While there was no mention of the committee meeting on the university calendar, notice of the special meeting was posted on the Secretary of State’s open meetings database on July 11. The listing says the executive committee is meeting at 6 p.m. at the Jacksonville Hampton Inn in preparation for Monday’s regular quarterly Board of Trustees meeting.
Board chairman Jim Bennett said the committee meeting was called to prepare the agenda and gather information for Monday’s meeting and that no votes would be taken at the session. Since the executive committee, which he called the procedural arm of the board, is made up of the chairs of the other board committees, it isn’t possible for it to meet at the same time as the rest. Bennett said Sunday was just a more convenient time since everyone was in town.
The Sunday meeting at the inn’s Gamecock Suite is open to the public, but, he said, “it’s not going to be anything too exciting.”
Executive committee members include Bennett, James Coxwell, Ronald Smith and Randall Jones.
Coxwell said a pre-meeting get-together wasn’t unusual. “We’ve always met at Dr. Meehan’s house and discussed things and no voting and just eat dinner,” he said. “We’re just having dinner together with each other.”
JSU President Bill Meehan said for the past year or so, they’ve held these social times for trustees coming in from out of town for the meeting. But this time, he said, he believes the trustees want to discuss issues such as the student health center and wanted to follow a more formal process for such a discussion.
The last special meeting listed in the open meetings database was called for June 16, 2011, for the entire Board of Trustees to discuss sports medicine and general medical services for the university. The last special committee meeting was called by the athletic committee in February of last year.
