If police in Oxford are taking extra precautions after the shooting that killed 12 people in a Colorado movie theater, they aren’t talking about it.

“They do as much intelligence on us as we do on them,” Oxford police Chief Bill Partridge said , referring to potential criminals. “I’m not going to let them know what we’re doing.”

Twelve people were killed, and dozens were injured, when a gunman entered a Colorado movie theater shortly after midnight today and opened fire on moviegoers watching “The Dark Knight Rises,” this summer’s Batman sequel, according to reports from the Associated Press.

Oxford’s Quintard Mall is home to the county’s only indoor movie theater. Asked whether police would be taking additional measures to beef up security there in the wake of the Colorado shooting, Partridge would say only that Oxford police always have a presence at the Mall.

“We have officers there all the time, and they will continue to be there,” he said. Off-duty police, in uniform, routinely provide security at the mall, Partridge said, and are paid by the mall for their services. Partridge said it’s not right to say they’re working as mall “security guards” while they’re on the mall’s payroll.

“They’re always Oxford police,” he said. Partridge wouldn’t comment on whether his department has received any advisories from other law-enforcement agencies with advice on additional security measures.

Quintard Mall spokeswoman Brooke McCulley said AmStar Theaters, the mall’s movie theater, is patrolled by both Oxford police and the mall’s own security employees.

“We’ll be vigilant about what’s going on, but we’ve not had any incidents,” she said.
