Paralyzed from the chest down after being wounded in Afghanistan, Ben is rehabilitating at home in Jacksonville. We know Ben faces monumental challenges as he trains and develops the skills necessary to live a successful life.
As a U.S. Marine, Ben earned his first Purple Heart when wounded in action in August 2009 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Ben earned his second Purple Heart in May 2011. As a result of his injuries, Ben has limited hand and arm mobility and is paralyzed from the chest line down. Ben’s efforts to make rehabilitative progress is a daily battle.
Ben is still full of that unique Marine spirit that is the hallmark of every boot-camp graduate. Borrowing an old Army phrase we are familiar with, Ben’s attitude is driven by a determination “to be all he can be!” There are a number of federal and nongovernmental programs that are providing support to Ben and his immediate family. But Ben’s definition of achieving independence should not be solely limited to or defined by bureaucratic limitations.
A local builder made modifications to the home prior to Ben’s return in January, but Ben would appreciate assistance outfitting the garage with a heating and air conditioning system necessary because of his medical condition, as well as safe exercise and therapy equipment and padded mats for the concrete floor.
Ben did not ask us to write this letter. Rather, those who know Ben and his family have identified some unfunded areas. With your financial assistance to augment the federal programs that may eventually be approved, Ben will be able to accomplish many miraculous goals.
