Getting to know customers is best part of serving food

Fidel Sanchez is a humble person, and maybe that’s why he’s such a great waiter. Sanchez doesn’t even like using the term “Best Waiter.”’ He deflects such hyperbole, saying he simply works hard to put forth his best effort.

“I always try to do my best,” he said.

Sanchez started working at Los Mexicanos when it was still on South Quintard Avenue. Now, Covalli’s satisfies residents’ cravings for Italian food at that location, while Los Mexicanos found a different location and opened a second store, too.

Sanchez moved to Tuscaloosa for a few years before returning in 2006, just in time to be on board when Los Mexicanos III opened up on Highway 78 East.

“We’re all like family,” he said. “We try to help each other out.”

In some cases, workers at the restaurant literally are family. For instance, Fidel’s brother works at the Los Mexicanos restaurant on Hamric Drive.

When asked about the best part of being a waiter, Sanchez said, “It’s getting to know the customers.”

Los Mexicanos III has customers who come in regularly and become like family. Being able to connect with customers in such a way makes him feel more connected to the Anniston community. It’s only through customers that he knows he’s doing a good job.

“Sometimes you just know when you’ve done a good job,” Sanchez said. “People just tell you when you’ve done a good job.”

The hardest part of being a waiter is when customers come in all at the same time and the restaurant is chaotic. It’s hard to do everything perfectly in such a scenario.

Sanchez wants to thank everyone who voted for him.

“I’m grateful they appreciate the job that I try my best at,” he said.
