The day camp, which will be housed at Camp Lee, is designed for children ages 6-10 who would otherwise not have the opportunity to go to summer camp.
“The camp is modeled after the Sawyerville Work Project,” said Lee Shafer, rector of Grace Episcopal.
The Sawyerville Work Project, held in Hale County, is “an annual camp for economically disadvantaged children and youth in the Black Belt of our state,” according to the project’s website.
Shafer said that the idea was just too great to be kept in the Black Belt.
Twenty-five teenage and adult staff members have volunteered from all over the state, and nearly 50 kids have already signed up for camp, Shafer said.
Each camper will receive a new swimsuit, towel, bag and water bottle, and spend the week doing activities including swimming, canoeing and riding a zip line.
If local churches or community members are interested in helping, Shafer said that they are still in need of new children’s-sized swimsuits (one-piece suits for girls), new beach towels, swim noodles and goggles.
