Deputies arrested Mareo Burton, 31, after a foot chase on Mulberry Avenue in Anniston Wednesday after receiving a tip about his location, Chief Deputy Matt Wade said.
Burton is suspected in a robbery at the Huddle House on U.S. 431 in Alexandria. Deputies say a man entered the establishment Monday at 11:45 p.m. and demanded someone give him money from the cash register. Deputies said Tuesday that the man who demanded money also threatened the cashier with violence.
By Tuesday morning, deputies had singled out Burton as a suspect. Wade said witnesses spotted a tattoo that matched a tattoo on Burton’s body. Wade said deputies had photos of Burton’s tattoos because he had prior arrests and convictions.
“When you come to the jail, we take a picture of all your tattoos and where they are, geographically, on your body,” Wade said.
Deputies put out a call for information on Burton’s whereabouts Tuesday and offered a $500 reward.
Wade said that while deputies were searching for Burton, he robbed two other stores — a Chevron station in Coldwater and a Kangaroo convenience store in Jacksonville. Wade said witnesses in at least one of those robberies reported that the robber pulled up his shirt to show a weapon in his belt — but didn’t draw the weapon.
Burton was already being sought as a suspect in an Anniston robbery and in a burglary and car theft at his mother’s Alexandria home, Wade said. He said that in interviews with deputies after the arrest, Burton gave information that linked him to the Jacksonville and Coldwater robberies, in addition to the robbery of an Arby’s in Oxford and the robberies of a Wendy’s, an Exxon and a Dollar Tree in Anniston.
