Oxford police today arrested and charged two men with burglary after finding them in a hardware store after hours.

Police said the suspects’ plan to burgle a hardware store by hiding inside during closing hours was unraveled by the alarm system.

Joshua Dylan Moody, 18, of Piedmont, and William Bradley Morgan, 29, of Anniston were charged with attempting to steal more than $2,500 worth of merchandise from the Lowe’s store on U.S. 78 after midnight, according to police reports.

Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens said officers headed to the store after the alarm was triggered at 12:15 a.m. Once inside, police quickly found Moody and Morgan stacking items in the middle of the store, Owens said. Both were arrested at the scene.

Owens said the scheme of hiding in a store after hours happens from time to time, but is rarely effective.

“It’s usually not a very good idea,” Owens said. “Most of these places have pretty good alarm systems that let you know when someone is moving around.”

Moody and Morgan were being held at the Oxford City Jail, charged with third-degree burglary. They are set to appear in court Aug. 8. Bond for Moody is set at $45,000 and for Morgan at $25,000.
