Wise gamblers are still putting money on the Alabama Legislature passing a charter-school bill this spring.

But any gambler who says he can predict what that bill will look like in its final form is a fool.

The bill passed Wednesday night by the Senate was, frankly, weird. It would allow for charter schools only in the state’s four largest cities, and it would only allow existing, low-performing schools to be turned into charter schools.

In other words, no new schools. And none in Calhoun County. But the House has yet to speak, and only five meeting days remain in this session.

We ask: What are the odds that the Legislature will settle on a bill that’s worth passing? We’ll know soon.
