If summer to you means hiking in the woods and singing around a campfire ... there’s a camp for that.

But if summer means honing your basketball skills, hanging out for a night at the museum or programming an app ... there’s a camp for that, too.

Outdoors Camps

Camp Cottaquilla

Operated by Girl Scouts, this is a 3,000-acre traditional camp in the foothills of the mountains. Day camps are open to all boys and girls. Resident camp is open to all girls, not just Scouts. Special sessions include designing clothes and accessories from recycled items; theater sessions where girls will spend the week acting, writing scripts and designing costumes; and a fairy-themed camp where girls will design their own fairy wings, go on a fairy hike and play fairy games.

This traditional outdoor camp, run by Anniston First United Methodist Church, hosts a day camp with games, crafts, Bible study, swimming, creek walk and natural rock slide.

Kids Night at the Museum
• Activities include a flashlight exploration of the exhibit halls, a live animal experience, nature/science games and crafts, photos of the evening, and dinner.

• Hands-on environmental education camp at Little River Canyon Center in Fort Payne. Outdoor fun, arts and exploration of nature.

Nature & Arts Camp

Greenager Nature & Arts Camp
• Hands-on environmental education camp at Martin Hall on the JSU campus for pre-teen and teenagers who have completed at least three years of nature camp.

• $200 (includes lunch and supplies). Pre-registration required.

Parent/Child Ethnobotany Camp Weekend
• Parents and children can learn about edible plants and their medicinal uses at DeSoto State Park in Mentone.
• Parents with children ages 8-18
• June 1-2
• Campfire talk, 8-9 p.m.; Saturday program, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Parent/Child Native American Pottery Workshop
• Join potter Tammy Beane to learn how pottery was made on Lookout Mountain thousands of years ago.
