Equal scholarship opportunity

Over the past several years, I’ve watched local high school golf, both boys and girls, and seen some really good golfers. I’ve also tried to support our local college, Jacksonville State, but I find it hard to do, especially since it does not support our local children with athletic scholarships.

If you go to the JSU website and look at the ladies golf roster, it looks like an international cuisine menu: Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Sweden and South Africa but no U.S. and certainly no residents of Alabama. What is it with JSU? We have golfers going to other states under full scholarships, thus we lose our children’s support to colleges in other states. It really burns me up to look at my state tax bill and the way I’ve supported JSU in the past, and know that it’s a one-sided relationship.

I recently heard that foreign students work harder, which isn’t true. I’ve watched these local kids practice every day in good and bad weather just to be ignored by JSU golf coaches. I believe it’s the other way around, the local golfers work harder at being good golfers than the coaches do at what they should be doing to put together a good team.

I would love to support JSU, especially since it’s in my back yard. I have nothing against foreign students, and I welcome them to the greatest state in the United States for their education, but give our children the same opportunity for scholarships.
