To take in a spirit-lifting hour of triumphant sounds, come to a concert Sunday afternoon at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Anniston. The Jacksonville State University Chamber Winds will perform organ music transcribed for wind instruments in celebration of the new trumpet pipes installed in the church last April, according to Kenneth G. Bodiford, the ensemble’s conductor. The concert is at 3 p.m.

The pipes were custom-made for the organ at St. Michael’s, according to the written self-guided tour of the church.

“This is the Chamber Winds’ first concert this semester,” Bodiford said, “and we’re very excited. The sounds of the organ and winds make a great combination, and we are looking forward to the benefit of the especially fine acoustics in this place of worship.”

The chamber winds will be joined by Dr. James Dorroh, organist and director of music at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham. As a member of the faculty of music at Samford University, he teaches studio organ, organ literature, organ pedagogy and service playing. In 2011, he was appointed University Organist. Dorroh, with the winds ensemble, will perform Symphony No.3 by the French composer Camille Saint-Saens. It is also known as the composer’s famous Organ Symphony. Dorroh’s solo will be Fanfare For Organ by John Cook.

Also included on the program is a Baroque piece of luxuriant strength: Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by the winds ensemble. The work was arranged to give audiences the illusion of soaring organ music, Bodiford said.

This is the premier band of the three concert bands at JSU, Bodiford added in talking about his group. Students are selected for membership in the JSU Chamber Winds each fall and spring by audition.

“There are many reasons to come to this concert,” said Caroline Haberer, a St. Michael’s member who also gives guided tours of the church. “This will be magnificent music in an outstanding historic venue, with wonderful acoustics. In fact, musicians ask to perform here because of the good acoustics.”

St. Michael and All Angels Church will also host The Indian Springs School Concert Choir on Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. This year, the choir will sing in eight languages, including music that is lyrical, serious and fun.

There is no admittance fee this Sunday. Everyone is invited.
