TUSCALOOSA — Handley scored twice in the final four minutes to capture the Class 3A state title with a 20-14 win over Madison County.

Duran Zachery scored on a 27-yard run to make it 14-13, but with 3:53 remaining second-ranked Handley went for the lead instead of the tie, with a two-point conversion.

Quay Hunter’s run was stuffed at the 1 setting up the late-game heroics.

Handley attempted and recovered an on-side kick and marched 43 yards in 3:11 to score what proved to be the game winner on a 1-yard run by Trae Kyles.

Handley’s defense held off a last-ditch effort by Madison Academy when quarterback Hunter Olive’s pass to Kerryon Johnson was caught out of bounds.

Handley did not complete a pass in the game, but outrushed Madison Academy 268 yards to 188. Hunter led the charge with 19 carries for 83 yards. Zachery had 12 carries for 75 yards and two scores.

His first came in the second quarter on a 2-yard run that tied the game at 7, where it stood until halftime.

Johnson scored both of Madison Academy’s touchdowns on runs of 11 and 24 yards. He finished with 14 carries for 59 yards.
