My grandfather was diagnosed with cancer about a month ago. The cancer cells are killing him and pulling his blood pressure low.
So, while they’re trick-or-treating and eating their lives away, I’m going to sit around with my family and pray he doesn’t die today.
Halloween was his favorite time, to laugh and dance around the room; so I brought him some candy for us to consume.
When I walked in, he smiled a sad and sorrowed woe. Somehow, I knew this may just be the day he goes.
I choked back tears as he beckoned me to his side. To my great surprise, he begged me to go outside.
We gathered up old costumes and went on our night stroll. As we said, “Trick-or-treat.” I knew, this story was a story to be told.
Even though he passed that night, he told me what to do. “Ring that der doorbell, yell trick-or-treat, and run like the wind before they catch you.”
So, every Halloween, I remembered that day. I was just a five-year-old when he passed away.
I laugh and think what a fool he must be, but I’ll never forget his last Halloween.
