ODENVILLE — Anniston overcame a slow start to roll past St. Clair County 42-7 and move to 4-1 in region play.

Troymaine Pope got Anniston’s scoring started right scoring from 18 yards out on the Bulldogs’ first drive.

But then Anniston fell into a lull.

And fell behind.

On the fourth play of the second quarter, Saints quarterback Matthew Hicks found Juan Montgomery for an 18-yard touchdown scoring strike. The subsequent point-after gave St. Clair County the lead, 7-6.

But it was only temporary.

Three plays into the ensuing drive, Pope scored from 50 yards out to give Anniston the lead for good and start the 36 unanswered points.

Pope finished with 15 carries for 134 yards and added a 38-yard touchdown reception, which gave Anniston a 28-7 halftime lead just four seconds before the half.

After Anniston took the lead, the Bulldogs forced a St. Clair County fumble, and Pope went to work.

He capped the five-play drive with a 6-yard run.

Late in the third quarter, Anniston added to its lead after another turnover. Jamar Jones’ interception set up a nine-play, 65-yard drive with Spencer Howard scoring from 3 yards out.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, Anniston scored its final touchdown on a 4-yard run by Brandon Gaston.

Anniston hosts Oneonta next week.
