An Oxford man was shot by a police officer Tuesday after pointing a gun at officers responding to a domestic violence call, police Chief Bill Partridge said.

Partridge said officers responded Tuesday night to a report of domestic violence at a home on Southmoor Circle.

Officers arriving at the scene heard sounds of conflict in the house, and heard a woman say “he’s got a gun,” Partridge said.

A standoff followed for several minutes, Partridge said. Then a woman emerged from the house, followed by a man with a gun, Partridge said.

“The male comes out with a gun in hand,” Partridge said. “He points it at the officers.”

At that point, Partridge said, an officer or officers shot the man.

Partridge did not release information on the man’s name or his condition, or on how many shots were fired. At 9:10 p.m. he told a reporter he had just arrived on the scene, and that an investigation into an “officer-involved shooting” was just beginning.
