Re “Show better sportsmanship” (Speak Out, Aug. 1):

Being an Alabama fan, I was offended by letter writer Mary Cooper’s comments about Bama fans. Because a man wore an “I hate Auburn” shirt or a man poisoned the trees at Toomer’s Corner does not represent all Bama fans, and to do so is unfair.

I know Alabama fans who donated to save the trees at Toomer’s Corner, and I myself felt sorry for Auburn and its fans. I, too, know Auburn fans who wear clothing that’s offensive to Bama fans, but it is all in the fun of the rivalry. I also know there are just as many Auburn fans who bad-mouth and have hostile behavior, mean attitudes and poor sportsmanship towards Alabama, but I do not think those few make up the majority of the two teams’ fans.

I have a lot of Auburn friends, and when they won the national championship, I was the first to congratulate them. And, yes, it was an honor to win the BCS national championship, and we are just as proud of our coaches and Nick Saban for honoring us with our 13th national championship. Roll Tide!
