The burn area, about one mile west of Cheaha State Park, will be bounded in part by Forest Service Road 651, according to a release from the Forest Service. Fire crews and equipment will be around the area during the burn. Smoke might also be visible on Clay County Road 42, Forest Service Road 651 and Alabama 281 east of the burn area.
Wind is expected to carry the smoke north toward the McIntosh community and Talladega County Road 135, the release said. Smoke might settle as temperatures cool tonight in the Dry Creek area and the Salt Creek road. Drivers in the area are urged to use caution and their low-beam headlights.
The burn is part of 28,000 acres the Forest Service plans to burn this year. Controlled burns are fires set and monitored by Forest Service workers. The burns are intended to remove fuel that could lead to uncontrollable fires if allowed to accumulate. They also help promote the growth of longleaf pines by burning away competitor species.
