If you have seen Mad Men, then you know how much this pains my soul, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same way.
I don’t want to get into all the he-said, she-said speculation going on about show creator Matthew Weiner and AMC being at odds. We only know what they want us to know, and people will wage their celebrity wars in the press — and I won’t have that mess in my column. I will say this: If Weiner doesn’t come back to Mad Men, then I will probably cry myself to sleep more nights than not.
So since there is no longer a season of Mad Men to look forward to in 2011, I’m going to give you some suggestions on what can hopefully help fill that hype-shaped void in your heart.
Yes, of course, AMC’s other hit show. This one’s about a chemistry teacher who can barely support his family and newly pregnant wife as it is. Then he finds out he has lung cancer. So he turns to meth — of course — to help provide for his family in the little time he has left. Oh, and his brother-in-law is a DEA agent. Needless to say, some very tense, very emotional hijinks ensue as we are asked to question what it means to be a father, a bread winner and a human being. Season 3 will hit shelves on Blu-ray and DVD June 7. And expect season 4 of Breaking Bad to air this summer — plenty of time for you to catch up on this brilliant show.
If you haven’t seen the trailer for J.J. Abrams’ new supernatural-sci-fi-alien-mystery movie then, well, you’re missing out. The trailer played at Iron Man 2 and the Superbowl, so it’s out there. This is definitely a movie you need to be excited for as Abrams has proven himself worthy of your anticipation. Oh, and some dude named Steven Spielberg is producing it, you may have heard of him. So be in the theaters June 10.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
Yes, be excited. It’s Harry Potter vs. He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. But you don’t need me to tell you that, because us fans of the series are eagerly awaiting July 15.
‘Mass Effect 3’
Bioware’s three-part masterpiece video game starring Commander Sheppard is scheduled to be released in the holiday season this year. The series features a complex and compelling — and sometimes sad and sometimes funny — story that wraps around the decisions the gamer makes, and each play-through feels unique to the player and their style of play. The series has already pushed storytelling and writing in games to the next level, so needless to say, I’ve been waiting on this one for a while.
