“Would you please pray about it?”

With those words ended a meeting between Ted Amberson, lead singer of local rock band My Lucky Number, and Chris Wright, station manager at local radio station Rock 105.9. Amberson had come to Wright about his band in hope the radio station would promote them.

My Lucky Number is a rock band of the modern era. Although Amberson, guitarist Jake Hale and bass player Lee Riley have more than 15 years of combined playing, writing and recording experience, they did not officially form their band until 2010.

“They approached me with a song a few months ago,” Wright said. “I liked it, but it’s difficult to promote local artists because they don’t have the support a big label can offer. At the end of our meeting, Ted asked me to pray about it.”

And pray is what Chris Wright did. As a result, he came up with the monthly feature at Rock 105.9.

The station named My Lucky Number the “Hometown Rock Artist of the Month” for March.

“We put their song ‘The Other Hand’ in the regular rotation, along with other songs that are at the top of the charts right now. We highlight it and play it every day. We also promote their webpage on the station’s site, www.rock1059.net, with all the information about the band and their shows,” Wright said. “They are real professionals to work with. I hope they make it big, they definitely have what it takes and they have a great message for the world to hear.”

That message, according to Amberson, is what is going on in their lives, something people can relate to, with a positive outlook.

“A lot of rock is loud and angry, we just write what is in our hearts,” he said. The band manages to show influences from the ’90s, such as Pearl Jam, while taking their music in a new direction.

MLN has already played at Heroes in Jacksonville a few times and performed an in-store concert at Cosmic Debris in Anniston last week. During its show, My Lucky Number plays only original songs, no covers, including “The Other Hand.”

“We are working on an EP, an extended play, which will come out in a few months,” Amberson said.

MLN will perform next at Heroes on April 15, and Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta on April 18. For more information about My Lucky Number, visit www.myluckynumber13.com.
