The 2011 legislative session will afford Alabamians the potential to improve the way shelter animals are treated.

A bill to ban gas chambers, Beckham’s Bill, named for a pup rescued from an Alabama gas chamber moments before he was to be destroyed, will be introduced by Sen. Del Marsh and Rep. Steve McMillan.

Several other legislators are co-sponsoring the bill. Animals put to death by gassing suffocate slowly; they fight each other as they begin to panic; they lose bodily functions and have convulsions during the 30 mintues to 40 minutes it takes to kill them.

Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation (AVRAL), the Alabama Humane Federation and the Alabama Animal Control Association have united to condemn gas chambers. Virtually every animal welfare organization, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, believes that intravenous injection is the most humane way to kill animals.

To insure the passage of the anti-gassing bill, we must contact our legislators and ask them to co-sponsor and support Beckham’s Bill. For help finding who to contact, join AVRAL, or go to www.alabamavotesforanimals.org. Membership is free and AVRAL will let you know who to contact in your district.

Proverbs 12:10: “A righteous man cares for his animals; but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.”
