State officials have banned the Alabama Education Association from recruiting new members on two-year college campuses, an AEA official says.

AEA spokesman David Stout said a legal opinion released by the state Department of Postsecondary Education would prohibit the organization from seeking and enrolling new members at community colleges. The group has about 4,900 members within the community college system.

Stout characterized the move as “an attack on the AEA.” He said that the change, along with the recent passage of a bill banning teachers from having their union dues automatically deducted from their paychecks, shows that state legislators and other officials are systematically working “to diminish the influence of the AEA.”

Officials of the Department of Postsecondary Education could not immediately be reached for comment. Check in at www.annistonstar.com for more updates.
