Director of Safety for Calhoun County schools, Mike Fincher, facilitated conversations between the systems' superintendents about the closings this week. He said the school system would reopen two hours late Thursday because the icy patches, which are few and far between, will be more visible later in the morning.
He said the system’s learned from municipal public works directors and the Calhoun County engineer that 90 percent of the roads in the area are safe for travel. Some of the rural roads in the northern part of the county still have icy patches that will likely remain frozen through the early morning hours Thursday and may pose a safety risk for early-morning travelers, he said.
The school systems reopening Thursday are: The Calhoun County School System, the Piedmont City School System, the Jacksonville City School System, the Oxford City School System and the Anniston City School System.
Three private schools will also reopen with a two-hour delay. They are: The Donoho School, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School and Jacksonville Christian Academy.
Faith Christian School will open at the regular time.
