The Writers of Calhoun County, a local creative writing group, will hold its first Literary Arts Event for the public from 5-9 p.m. Dec. 11 at the J.C. Morgan Arts Gallery at Quintard Mall.

The first hour will be a class taught by Alice Duckett for elementary-age students on how to write a poem. The students will produce a poem suitable for gift giving.

From 6-7 p.m., Suzanne Hobbs will teach a class for older youths and adults on writing haikus.

From 7-8:15 p.m., 10 members of the Writers of Calhoun County will speak in an open-mic event. The remainder of the time will be for writers and readers to make contacts, talk and enjoy the art on display. During the event, members of the group with books for sale will be present for a book signing.
