The Star’s headline got it wrong. The residents of Anniston won the auction for the Downtowner Inn by not outbidding the purchaser, and having to be saddled with the purchase price, and the perpetual money pit for property redevelopment and maintenance.
Also a Little irony here: As I recall, City Councilman Ben Little once wanted 14 or so buildings at McClellan for his ministry. The opposition claimed that McClellan should be a spur for growth, for jobs and opportunity for people in the city, and Little’s plan would be detrimental to the mission to re-develop the base. Now, Little is “very much disappointed” as the announced plan for the Downtowner is to establish a new ministry, rather than using the former motel as (Little’s words) “a spur for growth, for jobs and opportunity for people in the city.”
Wrong denomination? Or wrong pastor?
