Springville Elementary School third grade student Skylar Williams-Bryant has found a good use for old book bags.

During this holiday season, Skylar has made the decision that it is indeed better to give than receive.

He is filling these book bags with canned food items to give to the homeless and needy.

"I got the idea from my mom, and I hope to fill a lot of book bags," he said. "It does make me fill good to help people. I have also asked some of my classmates if they would like to help, and some of them do."

Springville Elementary School Principal Bobby Byrd said Skylar is a very intelligent young man.

"I think this is so very thoughtful of him," Byrd said. "Instead of throwing away the old book bags, he came up with this idea of helping those who are less fortunate.

"For a third grader to think of giving to others, it speaks volumes of not only him, but his mother and grandmother teaching him at home. These are the type of young men we want in our school. These are the type of young men we want to one day lead our state and our country."

Byrd noted that not only are canned food items being collected - so are toiletries and coats or jackets.

"We are at that time of year where it is cold outside," Byrd said. "I think Skylar is a very thoughtful young man."
