Christmas came early to several students at Steele Jr. High School recently.

Academy Sports and Outdoors in Gadsden donated 30 bicycles, helmets and backpacks to students.

Manager Michael Bishop said this is the 12th year for Academy Sports and Outdoors to do this for a local school.

"We choose a different school every year," Bishop said. "It just means so much to us to be able to give back to different communities.

"Academy likes to promote the outdoor lifestyle, and this is just one way to give something to a kid they can use in the outdoors. This means a lot to us."

SJHS Counselor Summer Burke said the gift "is just awesome."

"We are very proud and thankful of what Academy Sports and Outdoors has donated to students at Steele Jr. High School," Burke said. "It’s exciting and just wonderful."

SJHS physical education teacher Clint Hathcock said this is a great deal for Academy Sports and Outdoors to do this.

"It is so generous for them to do this," Hathcock said. "They are giving back to schools and communities. They focus on helping students, and that’s great."
