Gifts come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. The gifts that students at the St. Clair County Head Start received last week will go a long way to help keep them warm.

Women from Harkey’s Chapel United Methodist Church made 221 toboggans for the youngsters to make sure their heads are kept warm during the upcoming winter months.

Pastor at Harkey’s Chapel is the Rev. Charles J. Downing.

"Betty Barber and Myra Pijoe were the two leaders in making these toboggans," Downing said. "Most of the yarn was donated by Margaret Ogle. These ladies enjoy doing this as part of a mission project for Harkey’s Chapel. A group of ladies meet for quilting every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. noon. They bring a dish to share and have lunch."

Downing said these toboggans may seem like a small thing, but at the same time, it really is a big thing.

"This past Sunday, all of these toboggans were dedicated at our church," Downing said. "They were all laid on the altar, and our 25-member congregation came forward and laid hands on all the toboggans and said a special prayer. Their hearts are warmed just knowing some little head is warm. It’s a good thing, and it is something these ladies do every year. Sometimes they make more toboggans that go other places."
