Jeff Smith has worn several different hats during his tenure at Springville High School. Basketball coach, physical education teacher, driver’s education instructor and SHS assistant principal just to name a few.

But the one hat he really enjoys wearing one week out of the summer each year is basketball camp instructor.

Last week, Smith put on what he thinks is his 15th basketball camp since he has been at Springville High.

“This is just a great week,” Smith said. “What makes it so awesome is to know I have more girls at the camp this year than I have ever had. Our attendance has grown over the past five years.”

Smith said it is so important for these kids to learn the basic fundamentals of basketball during this camp.

“These are the same fundamentals I would teach my varsity team,” Smith said. “Fundamentals like ball-handling, shooting, jump stops, pivots, hook passes, left and right-handed dribbling, just to name a few.”

While a large majority of the campers were from Springville, there were a few from Ashville, Odenville, Trussville, Ohatchee and Glencoe.

When asked if running these basketball camps ever gets old, Smith said that it hasn’t yet.

“These camps are a lot of fun, and these kids are the reason I’m still doing it now, and have not pursued other job interests,” Smith said.

Smith noted that really has made the camp “over the top” is members of his varsity, junior varsity and B-team basketball teams helping to run the camp.

“These guys have been tremendous,” Smith said. “They have workouts early in the mornings, and then camp starts at 9 a.m. They come in here fired up and ready to help. They have made the camp for these kids so much better.”

The one coach who helped Smith this year was Daniel Cook, who coaches the junior varsity and ninth grade boys’ teams. Players helping included Isaiah Benson, Deondre Woody, Austin O’Neal, Conner Winston, Dave Phillips, Jordan Byrd, Zack Tucker, Bryce Brown, Nick Eldridge and Brant Brown.
