ASHVILLE – The third annual Tunes Around Town was a huge hit with a huge crowd.

Organizer Jalene Peaspanen said she and those who helped her were extremely pleased with last Saturday’s turnout.

“We had so many to come out and support this day,” Peaspanen said. “The flag retirement ceremony we had was beautiful. It was a great way to celebrate and honor our veterans who sacrificed for our freedoms.”

Peaspanen added that they were 63 vendors that surrounded the courthouse square who helped raise money for the Ashville High School Band.

“All of the money raised today will go toward the purchase of new instruments,” Peaspanen said.

Ashville mayor Robert McKay said he is so proud of Peaspanen and the others who put all the event together.

“We had great weather this year, and things turned out really good,” McKay said. “All we want to do as a city is support this every year. We want to help grow it, and hopefully next year, it will be bigger and better than ever.”

Musical entertainers included Melinda Chaney, Stephanie Whisenant, Flow Church Choir and Praise Team, Kevin Moore, Taylor McLain and the Etowah Youth Orchestra (EYO).

“This is a great opportunity, especially for the kids of St. Clair County who are in the EYO,” said EYO Music Director Mike Gagliardo. “Many times, people will look at the name of the organization and think we focus primarily on Etowah County. We’re not because we are really a multi-county, regional orchestra program. So to give the kids of St. Clair County a chance to play in their own backyard is a great opportunity for them.”

Pam Conway is the new president of the Ashville Band Boosters. She wanted to thank all the vendors that came out to support the band.

“I want to thank all the band parents who worked so hard to make this event a success,” Conway said. “The flag retirement ceremony was awesome, and it was touching to see how many people took the time to thank the veterans who were present.”

Conway also wanted to thank Peaspanen.

“Tunes Around Town is her creation,” Conway said. “It is her hard work and creativity that has made this such a great event for Ashville.”

Outgoing Band Booster President Amy Nabers said Tunes Around Town was a wonderful event this year.

“Support from the community for the band has been fantastic,” Nabers said. “Donations from sponsors have been tremendous. This event will go a long way in buying instruments for the band.”
