More than 50 volunteers from the Coosa River Baptist Association’s Carpenters for Christ ministry group recently traveled to Hickman, Ky., to help rebuild a burned-down church.

According to published reports, West Hickman Baptist Church was destroyed by a fire Jan. 23, the second time in three years the church was damaged by fire.

Each volunteer worked in a specific role in the project to construct a worship facility for the church’s 100-plus members.

Talladega Creek Baptist Church member Jimmy Scott, working alongside fellow church member Allen Senn with the Sheetrock group, arrived Sunday to aid the project and worked until Friday morning.

“I guess you could say the Lord sent us,” Scott said.

Scott gave an estimate on the amount of progress made during his time volunteering.

“We have just about everything finished outside the church,” Scott said. “On the inside, we’ve got about three-quarters of the Sheetrock done.”

While the volunteers worked tirelessly and the women from the group prepared meals throughout the day, members of the community embraced their efforts.

“The local response has been wonderful,” Scott said. “It’s been a blessing to be here doing this. They have come and given food, water and ice. They’ve helped sand Sheetrock, clean up and do all kinds of stuff.”

The community allowed the volunteers to stay in a local high school gym during their stay.

Scott stressed the group of volunteers consider the opportunity to minister to fellow Christians a gratifying experience

“It’s just important for us to go out, witness to people and just to help people out,” Scott said. “It’s a rewarding blessing. We just wanted to go help and get a blessing out of doing God’s work. As a Christian, we are disciples for Jesus Christ and to help build His kingdom.”
