An unregistered sex offender has been returned to the custody of the Talladega County Sheriff’s Department for failing to register as a sex offender.
Robert Dale Jones, 52, was convicted in Illinois on two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving two girls, ages 7 and 8, in 1990.
According to records from the Alabama Department of Public Safety, Jones had last registered as homeless and working in Sylacauga in September 2013.
“In Alabama, a homeless sex offender must register every seven days,” Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore said.
After Jones failed to report, Kilgore said, investigator Barry Kimsey began working with U.S. Marshals to locate Jones.
Marshals apprehended Jones in Illinois and extradited him to Talladega, where he was processed into the Talladega County Jail Wednesday evening.
Jones is being held on a $5,000 property bond.
Failure to register as a sex offender is a Class C felony in Alabama and carries a sentence of one year and one day to 10 years in prison upon conviction.
