The Talladega City Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday evening to hire Danny McCullars as chief school financial officer for the district, pending a successful background check.

McCullars has worked for the City of Anniston for the past 12 years, and has been that city’s finance director for the past six years.

He has an accounting degree from Jacksonville State University and is a certified public accountant. He will start work for the board no later than Monday.

“I am very pleased to be joining this system, with all the opportunities and challenges. I’m looking forward to contributing as the board and the superintendent see fit, and staying in good with the state board of education.”

McCullars was one of two classified personnel actions on the agenda for Wednesday. Both had been tabled at a meeting Monday. The second item was tabled again Wednesday, and will most likely come up again during the next regular board meeting on Aug. 11.

Wednesday was also the first meeting with Donna King as superintendent. When King presented the personnel actions to the board for approval, she pointed out that the recommendations were actually made by her predecessor, Doug Campbell.

“Today was my first day,” King said, “and it has been full and interesting.”

During her first day, King reported to the board that she had been informed that federal funding under the Title I program comes to just over $1 million.

“She worked really hard today,” according to board chairwoman Juanita Curry-McClellan.

Also Wednesday, the board:

O Hired Melissa Camp as a seventh-grade teacher at Zora Ellis Junior High School, Kyrel Keith as a physical education teacher at Zora Ellis, Zach Green as a P.E. teacher at C.L.
