The Town of Oak Grove received an Alabama Power Company grant Wednesday to buy a welcome sign.

“This is something we have been trying to do for a while, but we didn’t have the money,” Oak Grove Mayor Tony White said during a council meeting Wednesday. “We really appreciate receiving the grant.”

Alabama Power Company Oak Grove business office manager Steve Marlowe presented the $2,000 Gateway grant.

“Our Gateway grants give money to municipalities to put up ‘welcome’ signs for city and town pride,” he said. “Oak Grove is the first recipient of this grant in the Eastern Division of the state. We are honored to partner with them.”

White said there is already a sign rendering. The sign is expected to be placed at the intersection of Forest Glen Road and U.S. 280.

In other matters Wednesday, the council:

O Approved the volunteer firefighter application of Charles Murphy.

O Appointed Frank Young to the sewer board.
