CHILDERSBURG -- The City Council has hired a police officer and fireman/paramedic. The council made those decisions during its meeting Tuesday night.

Ron Harris was employed as a permanent full-time officer in the Police Department for $12 an hour. Russ Johnson was hired as a permanent full-time fireman/paramedic at $12.96 per hour.

In other business, the council:

  • Gave approval to Tommy Chamberlain to attend the annual ambulance conference at Orange Beach with a $500 fee, plus lodging, per diem and mileage;

  • Approved for two council members to participate in an upcoming leadership program with the Childersburg Chamber of Commerce;

  • Approved the transfer of a retail beer and wine license from current applicant Kahn & Friends to Guraya Int. Inc. The store‚Äôs name is Nik Nak and it is at 32522 U.S. Highway 280;

  • Tabled construction on a bathroom and repairs at the Senior Center pending an additional quote for the work;

  • Held a town hall meeting; and

  • Following the regular meeting, the council had a budget work session.

The next regular meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. It was rescheduled from Oct. 4 due to the runoff election.
