Books, Balls, and Blocks is coming to the St. Clair County Head Start campus on Tuesday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Presented by the Alabama Department of Children’s Affairs, the St. Clair Children’s Policy Council and Head Start, this event will be something special for families in this county.

“The goal is for parents to be able to observe their children in eight different play areas and determine whether or not they meet developmental milestones,” said Cheryl Fagan, executive director of the Children’s Policy Council. “Parents will use the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) and will be able to see first-hand where their children are in the areas of communication, motor skills and problem solving.”

The ASQ is the tool used by Head Start to evaluate students during the first 45 days of school. This event will allow Head Start to get a “head start” on this evaluation. There are 217 children enrolled to begin this fall.

The Books, Balls, and Blocks event is free for parents and children ages 4 months to 5 years of age.

“All materials and equipment are provided by the Alabama Department of Children’s Affairs out of Montgomery,” Fagan said. “This will be a great time and beneficial to parents, children and teachers.”

There will also be an area for dental, vision, and hearing screenings.

The event is free and will be held on the campus of St. Clair County Head Start.
