The Sylacauga Board of Education approved a list of personnel matters in a brief called meeting Friday morning, and heard a report from Superintendent Dr. Todd Freeman that the school year is off to a smooth start.

Freeman said the system finished the day Thursday with 2,330 students enrolled in its four schools – Indian Valley Elementary, Pinecrest Elementary, Nichols-Lawson Middle and Sylacauga High. That’s 10 to 20 more students than were enrolled when students reported for their first day on Monday, and Freeman noted that enrollment will likely fluctuate a little more in the coming days.

On Freeman’s recommendation, board members Steve Marlowe, Jennie McGhee and Melissa Garris approved the following personnel actions:

O Resignations of Christine Moore, instructional assistant at Indian Valley, effective Aug. 1, and Rebecca Williams, instructional assistant at Pinecrest, effective Aug. 6.

O Transfer of Marty Turner from 7th-8th grade head baseball coach to varsity assistant baseball coach, effective with the new school year.

O Employment of Michelle Kimber, Cheryl Tubbs and Karen Torgerson, substitute teachers for extended day program at Indian Valley, effective immediately; Anna Blankenship, instructional assistant at Indian Valley, effective Aug. 18; Janice Shephard, Jamie Roston, Dale Carmen Wilson, Betty Player and Tonette Turner, substitute teachers, effective Aug. 18; Mike Gibbs, varsity assistant football coach, SHS, effective with the new school year; Dwyaine Jackson, 9th grade boys basketball coach, SHS, effective with the new school year; Richard Coleman, varsity assistant girls basketball coach, SHS, effective with the new school year; Patrick Harris, 7th-8th grade head baseball coach, NLMS, effective with new school year; Thomas Brown, 7th-8th grade assistant baseball coach, NLMS, effective with the new school year; and Paul Lynch, head girls soccer coach, SHS, effective with the new school year.

The board’s next regular meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education office. At that meeting, the board will have its first budget hearing for fiscal year 2014-15.
