John Austin Williamson is the recipient of the John McBride Scholarship, which was awarded on May 23 during the THS Graduation Ceremony.
John Anderson McBride was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Talladega and graduated in 1951 from Talladega High School with honors. He attended the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, on a football scholarship and was a cadet in the U.S. Air Force Unit there. In July 1954 at the age of 22, while attending Air Force ROTC Summer Training Camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, McBride and the flight instructor lost their lives in a trainer plane crash.
Every year since 1955, in McBride’s memory, the McBride family has presented a trophy and a scholarship award to an outstanding graduate of Talladega High School.
This scholarship is given to promote good sportsmanship and fair play. The recipient must earn a letter in at least one varsity sport, make above average academic rating and demonstrate excellent character and outstanding leadership, both off and on the field of play.
Williamson has played football and golf at THS. In addition to sports, he has maintained a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend Troy University in Troy.
Williamson is the son of John and Robie Williamson of Talladega.
