The Sylacauga Utilities Board has repaired two broken aerators at the J. Earl Ham Wastewater Treatment Facility that caused a bothersome sewage odor near Old Sylacauga Highway in the Five Points area.

“Last week, we had two aerators that failed,” Sylacauga Utilities Board general manager Mike Richard said Tuesday. “Aerators are basically big pumps that blow oxygen into the incoming lagoons before we actually treat it, so two of the aeration pumps failed, and they have been replaced, but it takes a while for the plant to catch back up. I would imagine the smell would be gone by today or in the next day or so.”

The treatment plant is on the Old Sylacauga Highway in the Walco area along Shirtee Creek.
