The Springville Tigers did not have to look very far to find a new head football coach. Steve Davis, an assistant football coach for 10 years under mentor Keith Maple, was named the new head coach Monday by the St.Clair County Board of Education.
Davis, 39, played high school football at Dadeville, and then was a walk-on at Auburn University 1994-97.
“This is such an honor,” Davis said. “It is an honor to follow Coach Maple. I thank Dr. Robert Harris so much for this opportunity. I can’t think of a better way to start off my head coaching career.”
Davis said after being an assistant coach 10 years, he knows how things are set up and run.
“I have taught elementary students the past 10 years,” Davis said. “This is a good time and a good fit for me.”
Davis’ coaching career started at McAdory and he coached with Maple and Jim Taylor, who will be helping Davis with the middle school football program.
“We have a good bunch of boys at Springville,” Davis said.
Harris said Davis was an assistant who left but came back because he wanted to finish out his career at Springville.
“He is a longtime dedicated assistant who has been very loyal,” Harris said.
